METHOD AND KIT FOR MANUFACTURING A STRUCTURE WITH A MASSIFOOD WOOD FILLING
TECHNICAL DOMAIN
The present invention relates to a method and a kit for manufacturing structures with a solid wood surface fill, as well as to such structures as such.
BACKGROUND ART
Structures such as window shutters, doors and gates, comprising a surface filling of solid wood, are in principle known from the prior art.
For example, US 3 648 981 A describes a fence with wooden panels arranged vertically alongside each other. The lower and upper edges of the panels are thereby suitably held in slotted tubes / tubes, which tubes / tubes are supported on both sides by steel supports. In this way the panels are attached without the use of nails, screws, bolts and the like. Optionally, the side edges of the panels connect to each other by means of overlap connections. This is a static fence, unsuitable for releasing an opening in a wall or fence.
NL 2002 193 also describes an exterior door, completely manufactured from thermally and / or chemically preserved softwood. The door thereby comprises a frame of two posts and two sills, which frame is reinforced internally via pins. The opening inside is filled with a filling material such as wood.
Typically, a structure such as a window shutter, a door or a garden gate is assessed for its high durability, under the influence of a multitude of weather influences, for its low weight, for its clean appearance, and for its low material costs, production costs and installation costs. Instead, or in addition, may have further properties. It is an object of the present invention to provide a structure with a solid wood surface filling, which structure is simple in design, but durable and has a modern appearance. Among other things, efforts are being made to improve some of the above characteristics.
BE2018 / 5149
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In a first aspect, the invention relates to a structure according to claim 1, comprising a solid wood surface filling with a plurality of solid wood beams that connect to each other by means of width connections, along profiled thickness sides that are glued together. Thus, a profiled and glued connection is thereby achieved. The solid wood surface filling thus acquires a high rigidity, and is capable of fulfilling a dual function; it contributes to both the appearance and the firmness of the structure. This allows a minimalist and modern design, with or without a frame. The said width connections furthermore extend along the longitudinal direction, substantially parallel to the wood thread of the wood. Consequently, they do not stand out visually, along the front and rear of the structure. Said profiled thickness sides preferably have a profile with an invariant cross-section, in the longitudinal direction of the beams. This allows for simple fabrication by means of a milling action in the longitudinal direction.
The structure is preferably a closing means such as a window shutter, a door or a gate, which closing means comprises a solid wooden closing surface, being the surface filling, for releasing and blocking an opening in a wall or fence. The surface filling can herein preferably be brought into a respective open and closed state. However, the invention is not limited in any way to closing means. According to non-limitative embodiments, the structure is a decorative hatch or a wall panel.
In a further embodiment according to claim 2, the beams comprise thermally modified wood. This makes the structure much more durable; it also has increased dimensional stability, which is of particular importance for structures suitable for outdoor use, such as window shutters, exterior doors and garden gates. In a further or alternative embodiment according to claim 4, the surface filling has a horizontal and a vertical direction, the longitudinal direction of the beams extending in the horizontal direction of the surface filling. This favors the cohesion of the surface filling in the horizontal direction, which benefits the robustness of structures. However, in alternative embodiments, the longitudinal direction of the beams extends according to the standing direction of the structure.
BE2018 / 5149
In a second and third aspect, the invention relates to a method according to claim 14 and a kit according to claim 15, for manufacturing a structure such as a garden gate, but in no way limited thereto.

In a first aspect, the invention relates to a structure comprising a solid wood surface filling, the surface filling thereby comprising a plurality of solid wood beams, which beams each have a longitudinal direction, a width direction and a thickness direction, and which beams further comprise two thickness sides transversely of the extending widthwise, wherein the beams connect to each other according to their widthwise direction, by means of width connections between the mutually adjoining thickness sides, to form said surface filling. In particular, at least one of the said width connections is a profiled and glued connection, the mutually adjoining thickness sides being formed according to a complementary profile. Preferably, each of the said width connections are profiled and glued connections. The structure can be, for example, a pivoting (e.g., horizontally hinged) gate or sliding gate.
Preferably, said surface filling is substantially panel-shaped. The structure is preferably a closing means, but it is by no means limited thereto. According to a number of non-limiting embodiments, the surface filling here relates to a window hatch surface, a door surface or a gate surface, for at least partially closing a window opening, a door opening and a gate opening, respectively. However, the invention is not limited to any of these embodiments. The surface filling is preferably configurable in and between an open state and a closed state. According to a possible embodiment, the structure is a garden gate, wherein the surface filling is a gate surface. The invention is by no means limited to this.
The said beams are preferably substantially beam-shaped, wherein they are characterized by a "longitudinal direction", a "width direction" and a "thickness direction". However, their design may differ slightly from the "mathematically perfect."
BE2018 / 5149 beam "; for example, one or more "beam sides" (which correspond to the faces of the corresponding beam) are optionally provided with a functional and / or aesthetic roughening, profiling, embossing, slope and / or other deformation. The beam has a total of six beam sides, which are substantially rectangular: namely two width sides, two thickness sides and two end faces. The designation of the aforementioned directions and beam sides takes place in accordance with the usual terminology within the field of woodworking. Preferably, the longitudinal direction of the beam extends substantially along the wood fibers (or wood wire), and transversely of the two end faces. Preferably, the width direction of the beam extends substantially transversely to the wood fibers and longitudinal directions, and transversely to the two thickness sides. Preferably, the thickness direction of the beam extends substantially transversely of the wood fibers, longitudinal direction and width direction, and transversely of the two width sides. The length, width and thickness of the beam always refer to the average dimension of the beam according to the corresponding directions. Incidentally, it is not necessary that all beams have the same dimensions; optionally one or more of the beams have one or more, mutually different dimensions. According to a non-limitative embodiment, all beams are approximately the same length, wherein they are assembled into a rectangular surface fill.
The term "solid wood" is to be understood herein as not hollow, fully filled, and preferably substantially made of the same material. However, the solid wood surface filling preferably does not consist of one part; it is made up of a multitude of solid wood beams, with an eye on the strength, cost and feasibility of the design. These individual beams consist of one part, or they are in turn made up of several solid wood parts, with the same considerations.
"Width joints," as used throughout this document, indicate joints where thickness sides of beams are joined together to achieve a wider piece. The beams are thereby brought side by side in the width direction and coupled. "Longitudinal connections," as used throughout this document, indicate connections where end faces of beams are joined together to achieve a longer stretch. The beams are thereby brought side by side in the longitudinal direction and coupled. Now the beams connect to each other according to their width direction, by means of width connections; they are, as it were, stacked on top of each other according to their width direction, and connected together along their thickness sides. Because of this, a garden gate can, according to one
BE2018 / 5149 possible embodiment of the invention, also referred to as a stacking gate. In any case, the longitudinal directions of the beams are mutually parallel. The width connections extend in the longitudinal direction, substantially parallel to the wood fiber or wood wire. Along the front and back (i.e. along the width sides) of the surface filling, these width connections are therefore less noticeable; they can only be perceived as a linear interruption between two wood parts. The surface filling therefore looks more massive.
In particular, at least one of said width connections is a profiled and glued connection. Adjacent thickness sides are herein formed according to a mutually complementary profile, so that they fit into each other. The glued surface is therefore larger than for a so-called "cold-glued" joint, which reinforces the joint. Preferably, said profiled width joint is selected from the group comprising dovetail joints, trapezoidal joints, finger joints and tongue and groove joints, as known per se from the woodwork. In this context, the terms "finger joint", "finger joint", "herringbone weld", "herringbone joint" throughout this document are considered interchangeable; they apply to both length connections and width connections, irrespective of the direction in which the fingers extend with an invariable transverse cross-section. The bonding itself can be carried out by means of an adhesive comprising a phenolic resin, a polyurethane, a urea formaldehyde, a polyvinyl acetate and / or using any other suitable adhesive. Preferably, the width connections do not include mechanical connections such as nails, bolts, and screws. These could cause the wood to split and weaken. They also change the appearance of the structure. However, an optional mechanical connection is also used.
The solid wood beams are thus firmly connected to each other over their entire length, e.g. profiled bonding, to form a solid surface filling. The flat fill not only functions as a flat fill, within a structural / supporting framework; it also has at least a partial, structural / supporting function. This allows a very minimalist and modern design. For example, the frame can thereby be made lighter, or left out, resulting in a lower production cost. Preferably, each of the said width connections is profiled and glued. This reinforces the double
BE2018 / 5149 functionality (ie contribution to both appearance and firmness) of the surface filling. According to a non-limitative embodiment, the structure does not even include a frame; according to a possible embodiment, the structure is a garden gate, substantially consisting of a gate surface (i.e. the surface filling), without a gate frame. The gate surface is thereby directly hinged / pivoting / sliding coupled to gate posts. The gate faces are in particular self-supporting. However, the invention is by no means limited to this embodiment.
Preferably, the above-mentioned complementary profile extends with an unchanging cross-section in the longitudinal direction of the beams. The width connections can then only be seen as a straight line along the front and rear, substantially parallel to the wood thread. Moreover, such a profile (e.g. a finger profile) can be obtained in a simple manner by means of a milling action in the longitudinal direction.
In alternative embodiments, mutually complementary profiles are not used. For example, the profiles are each complementary to loose thresholds, springs or pins, which allow gluing with the thickness sides involved. It is also possible that the thickness sides in question are glued together cold.
Preferably, quarter bars and / or half-quarter bars are used. However, this is not necessarily the case; dosse beams can also be used. Where appropriate, quarter-sawn and dos-sawn wood is preferably not used interchangeably, within one structure, due to a substantial difference in drawing; however, as an alternative this can be done. Preferably, heart bars are used, but this is not necessarily the case. The center edges of adjacent beams are preferably laid alternately, inter alia to keep the joint between them closed. However, in view of the simplicity of the production process, deviations can be made, provided that the wood is sufficiently dimensionally stable.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the beams comprise thermally modified wood. Thermally modified wood "is wood that has been subjected to one or more heating steps, at temperatures of at least 100 ° C, preferably between 100 ° C and 350 ° C, more preferably at temperatures of at least 150 ° C, more preferably at most 280 ° C, more preferably
BE2018 / 5149 minimum 160 ° C, more preferably maximum 260 ° C. These heating steps preferably take place in a medium with a low oxygen content, for example in nitrogen gas, steam, oil, and / or in any other suitable medium.
Under the influence of the above heating step (s), the wood undergoes a number of chemical and / or physical changes. Different material properties are thereby changed when compared to the non-modified, oven-dried wood. Thermally modified wood, for example, is less sensitive to fungi and rot, as well as to insect damage. Furthermore, it has a lower equilibrium moisture content, as a result of which such wood exhibits less expansion and shrinkage, and as a result of which it has an increased dimensional stability. The increased dimensional stability of the wood can optionally allow the beams to be arranged randomly past each other instead of mutually alternating heart edges, which simplifies the production process. Preferably, however, heart edges are still laid alternately. Thermally modified wood also typically has a lower density, and is therefore extremely suitable for processing in wooden, lightweight surface fillings for structures, i.h.b. when these are to be provided for hinged / pivoting / sliding, as is typically the case with gates, doors and window shutters. There is also less color variation (as expressed by differences in lightness - Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) in thermally modified wood, under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Thermally modified wood is also not harmful to the environment. The final properties are of course influenced by the type of wood, the heating medium, the heating temperature, and the heating time.
The thermally modified wood preferably has a durability class 1, 2 or 3, in accordance with the European Standard EN 350-2. Wood of initially low density can therefore still be used in a sustainable manner in structures, thereby suitable for outdoor use. According to a non-limitative embodiment, the wood is used in a window hatch, an outside door and / or a garden gate. Moreover, it is possible that the density is additionally reduced, due to the thermal modification process. Preferably, the density is at most 98% of the average density of the unmodified wood of the same wood, more preferably at most 96%, more preferably at most 94%, further preferably at most 92%, and further preferably at most 90 %. Preferably, the volume-weighted shrinkage of the thermally modified wood is lower than the average value for the non-modified wood of the same wood species,
BE2018 / 5149 further preferably it is at most 95% thereof, more preferably at most 90% thereof, further preferably at most 85% thereof, further preferably at most 80% thereof. Preferably, the thermally modified wood has a lower hemicellulose content than the unmodified wood of the same type of wood. This is advantageous since all kinds of wood rot mechanisms typically focus on hemicellulose. More preferably, that content is at most 90% of the average content in the non-modified wood, more preferably at most 80%, more preferably at most 70%, more preferably at most 60%.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, at least one of said width connections is a finger joint. Preferably, all said width connections are finger joints. The thickness sides of the adjacent beams are thereby provided with mutually complementary (i.e. in-fitting) finger profiles by means of a milling operation. In cross section, these profiles have the shape of triangular fingers. These fingers preferably have an unchanging cross-section in the longitudinal direction, with the abovementioned advantages.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the surface filling has a horizontal and a vertical direction, the longitudinal direction of the beams extending in the horizontal direction of the surface filling. In the installed state, the horizontal and vertical directions extend horizontally and vertically respectively. According to the present embodiment, the beams are thus stacked on top of each other according to their width direction, with mutually connecting thickness sides. Such a design favors the cohesion of the structure in the horizontal direction; the profiled glue connections are firm, but they represent weakening of the surface filling. For horizontal / horizontal hinged structures, it is typically of great importance that the structure has a large coherence in the horizontal direction, to which gravity traverses. This is in particular the case for gate surfaces that are often wider (in the horizontal direction) than they are high (in the vertical direction). According to an alternative embodiment, the surface filling has a horizontal and a vertical direction, the longitudinal direction of the beams extending in the vertical direction of the surface filling. The beams in the installed structure are then arranged vertically.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the surface filling comprises a front side and a rear side, transverse to the thickness direction of the beams
BE2018 / 5149, which front and / or back is formed according to a profiled pattern. Typically, the front and back are visible on the structure, allowing the pattern to fulfill an aesthetic function; it influences the appearance of the structure. In the most general embodiment, the profiled pattern is random, with wavy and / or straight lines, indented surface parts and / or any other shapes. The maximum depth of the profiled pattern is preferably at least 2% of the average thickness of the surface filling, and at most 35%, more preferably at most 30%, more preferably at most 25%.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the profiled pattern comprises one or more kinks and / or discontinuities, which extend at least partially parallel to one or more of the width connections. Parallel to the width connections, one or more sudden recesses arise in the wood surface, either continuously (i.e. via a bend) or discontinuously (i.e. via a discontinuity). The presence of the width connections between beam parts is therefore less noticeable, because the attention is derived from it. Such kinks and / or discontinuities, at (or along) the width connections, may even give the impression that the connecting parts are formed from one piece of wood, the visually observed interruption being attributed to the kink / discontinuity, instead of the width connection self. The composition of beams into a surface filling can in itself already make it possible to obtain a profiled pattern, for example by combining beams of different, whether or not constant, thickness. The width connection also has an aesthetic function.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the pattern is an oriented pattern, which pattern is thereby oriented at least in the longitudinal direction of the beams. The oriented pattern can also form a periodic grid, inter alia (or at least) a periodicity according to the longitudinal direction of the beams.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, the beams each comprise two width sides, extending transversely to the thickness direction of the beam, wherein at least one of the width sides is formed according to a profiled pattern. The said width sides are located along the front and rear of the surface filling. Their profiled pattern thus contributes to the profiled pattern of the front and / or rear of the surface fill. The profiled pattern of the individual beams preferably has an unchanging cross-section along the longitudinal direction of the beam. This can be a simultaneous and / or subsequent manufacture of (a)
BE2018 / 5149 the above-mentioned complementary profile along one or both thickness sides and (b) allow the profiled pattern along one or both width sides, by means of milling actions in the longitudinal direction. To this end, one or more milling machines can be arranged in line with each other, with passage of the beams in the process line along their longitudinal direction. Alternatively, each of these milling actions (in the longitudinal direction) are performed by a single pass through a single milling machine. This allows upscaling and possibly automation.
According to a further or alternative embodiment, at least one of the beams comprises two or more beam parts, which beam parts connect to each other by means of profiled, glued length connections to form the said beam. Optionally, one or more of the solid wood beams can thus in turn comprise two or more beam ends. In this context, the cost price, feasibility and robustness of the design can be taken into consideration. Preferably, said length connections comprise a finger joint.
In possible embodiments of the present invention, the surface filling can be carried out in any suitable wood type and / or combinations of wood types, with or without further materials. In a further or alternative embodiment, said thermally modified wood has a density of a minimum of 200 kg / m 3 and a maximum of 650 kg / m 3 . The density is preferably determined at equilibrium with an environment of 65% relative humidity, at a temperature of 20 ° C.
In a further or alternative embodiment, the structure further comprises a frame for enclosing the surface filling, wherein an inner side of the frame encloses an edge part of the surface filling. The frame preferably encloses the entire edge of the surface filling. Thus, that edge and also the corners of the surface filling are thereby protected against dents. In a further or alternative embodiment, the edge part of the surface filling comprises a groove, and the inside of the frame comprises a corresponding tooth. In such a design, water is prevented from standing in an upwardly directed groove along an edge portion of the surface filling. At the top of the surface filling, any water that has seeped in may, for example, flow out on either side of the groove. The frame is preferably at least as wide as, and preferably wider than, the adjacent beam part, but this is not necessarily the case. Preferably, the above-mentioned tongue (s) and groove (s) extend parallel to the surface filling (and the structure).
BE2018 / 5149
The frame can comprise wood, plastic and / or metal. Preferably it comprises hollow or full metal profiles, preferably aluminum profiles.
In a second aspect, the invention relates to a method for manufacturing a structure with solid wood surface filling, which method comprises the steps of:
- providing a plurality of solid wood beams, comprising a lower beam, an upper beam and intermediate beams, which beams have a longitudinal direction, a width direction and a thickness direction, and which beams thereby comprise two thickness sides,
- milling, by means of a gluing cutter, a finger profile along one thickness side of the lower and upper beams, and along both thickness sides of the intermediate beams, and
- gluing the beams along the milled thickness sides, thereby forming the surface filling.
The finger profiles mentioned are mutually complementary. Preferably, the method is configured to manufacture the structure described above. The same benefits can be repeated in this regard. According to a possible, but by no means limitative, embodiment, the method is configured to manufacture a garden gate.
There is a lower bar and an upper bar. However, the surface filling can of course be assembled horizontally as well as vertically from a suitable set of beams. Where the surface filling is assembled vertically, the beams can be provided both horizontally and vertically. In this respect, the terms "bottom bar" and "top bar" need not be exhaustive.
In a third aspect, the invention relates to a kit comprising a plurality of solid wood beams. In particular, the kit is configured to manufacture the structure described above, for example, to manufacture a garden gate. The same benefits can be repeated in this regard.
In the following, the invention is described a.d.h.v. non-limiting examples or figures illustrating the invention, which are not intended or may be interpreted to limit the scope of the invention.
BE2018 / 5149
Figure 1 shows a schematic front view of a structure 1, in particular a garden gate 1, according to a possible embodiment of the present invention. The garden gate 1 comprises a gate surface 2 and a gate frame 3. The gate frame 3 is connected via hinges 4 to a gate post 5, to form a hinged / pivoting garden gate 1. The garden gate 1 can of course be designed with or without a frame, and is the invention is in no way limited to hinged / pivoting gates; it may also relate to other types of ports (e.g., sliding gates). The person skilled in the art is able to adapt the embodiment according to figure 1 accordingly. Optionally, the garden gate 1 can be closed by means of a closing mechanism 6 against a second gate post 5 '. The garden gate 1 is thereby configured to at least partially release and block a gate opening in a fence. Optionally, this fence comprises only the garden gate 1 and the two gate posts 5, 5 '.
A horizontal direction 7 and a vertical direction 8 are now defined with respect to garden gate 1. With these definitions, the gate surface 2 consists of eight beams 9, the longitudinal direction of which is oriented in the horizontal direction 7. In their width direction (i.e. in the present embodiment according to the standing direction 8 of the garden gate 1) these beams connect to each other by means of profiled width connections 10. Along the (shown) front side of the gate surface 2, the width connections 10 can only be perceived as straight, horizontal, line breaks in the wood. The front side of the gate surface may or may not include profiled patterns (not shown in the figure).
Figures 2A and 2B show schematic cross-sections of garden gates 1 according to two embodiments of the present invention. The lower part of the gate frame 3, and (parts of) the upper beams 9 are shown each time. The beams 9 are stacked vertically (i.e. according to their width direction) and connect to each other by means of profiled and glued width connections 10. In both embodiments it is a question of finger welding with triangular fingers 11. However, the invention can also be carried out by means of other types of profiled connections. Preferably, the transverse profile of the beams 9 shown is substantially invariable along the longitudinal direction of the beam 9, transverse to the figure. In both figures, both the front side 12 and the rear side 13 of the gate surface 2 are formed according to a profiled pattern.
BE2018 / 5149
In Fig. 2A, that profiled pattern comprises periodic discontinuities 14. These discontinuities 14 extend in the longitudinal direction of the beams, parallel to the width connections 10. The gate frame 3 moreover comprises a tooth 15 along the inside 16. The said tooth 15 becomes fitting into a groove 17 of the gate surface 2. Moreover, the gate frame 3 is wider than the maximum thickness of the gate surface 2.
In figure 2B the profiled pattern comprises bends 18, which also extend in the longitudinal direction. The gate frame 3 is as wide as the average thickness of the gate surface 2. It is glued to the bottom of the bottom beam 9.
Example 1: a structure according to the present invention can just as well be a door, for example an inner door or an outer door, with a stacked door surface. Optionally, that door surface is provided within a door frame, preferably of aluminum. The door mentioned is preferably suitable for releasing and blocking an opening within a wall.
Example 2: a structure according to the present invention may equally well be a window shutter, with a stacked window shutter surface. Optionally, that window shutter surface is provided within a window shutter frame, preferably of aluminum. Optionally, that window shutter is suitable for releasing and blocking a window opening. However, this is not necessarily the case; optionally it can be a purely aesthetic window shutter.
Example 3: a structure according to the present invention may just as well be a wall panel, for example for covering a wall surface at least partially by means of a stacked surface filling according to claim 1.
It should be emphasized, however, that the profiled pattern can take any shape and at least contribute to the appearance of the gate.
